Subject Cruise down Bedford River
June Barnes & David Fowler
July 2, 2014

We chartered the community boat ‘John Bunyan’ for the round trip from Priory marina to Honey Hills, Kempston. David Fowler was on board to give a commentary on the historical aspects of the journey e.g the building of the bridges, the opening of the lock, the creation of the embankment gardens, the site of the WWII language training school, the King’s Ditch etc.

We noted that nobody seems to know why the Danelaw boundary came along the River Ouse and what the impact would have been on the town of Bedford as it straddled the river.

One of our members has volunteered to help with future trips of the boat as it attempts to raise money for the creation of a navigable waterway from Bedford to Milton Keynes.
