Victoria Wicks, a grandaughter of HE Bates, relived the life of HE Bates and his visits to his relatives in Sharnbrook and Rushden. Special emphasis ws given th Joseph Betts , portrayed as a rake, drunkard and womaniser who was the inspiration for Uncle Silas. The portfolio of short stories was used as the framework for telling us of the links to well-known Sharnbrook families- it became clera that some of facts relating to the family were borrowed and perhaps massaged to tell a good yarn. We were particularly encouraged to read the story of the Wedding as it clearly related to people and places in Solbrook.
