The techniques use din the HEFA prject could easilt be extrapolated to further test pits within the community. Volunteers from around the village agreed to dig pits in their own gardens or to assist with pits on open ground. This allowed us to investigate parts of the village not covered by the earlier HEFA activity.
Test pits were dug in several new locations, the techniques used and the methods of record keeping followed that as used in HEFA digs; finds were sent to Paul Blinkthorn for identification and dating.
We visited ACA in Cambridge to create a reference collection of pottery types from the village. Examples of each type were identified and prepared for display. This collection can be used in future excavations. Comparing our collection with the Bedfordshire Reference collection held at Albion Archaeology shows the significant degree of variations seen within one type. The latter collection definitely needs TLC to make it more useful.
