The importance of the Castle , the Church and the TWO BURGHS was pivotal to the early development of the town.  The various monastic buidings led to the natual expansion of the town both to the east and the west. The site of the river bridge was critical to the  road structure. The navigability of the Great Ouse led to the creation of wharfs close to the town centre.
