This talk is the culmination of Matt’s PhD study at Leicester University. The work is an extension of the study of Chellington/Carlton Parish to include the whole of the Willey Hundred.

The talk looked at the geology of the landscape and compared it to the neighbouring Bromswold area of the Beds/Northants border and with the valleys of the Ouzel and the Ivel which are the two main tributaries of the Great Ouse. The nature of the soil impacted the river crossings, the road layouts, the field system etc. The importance of the central area denoted by Wrathmell and Roberts was reflected in the extent of ridge and furrow and certain settlement types. The significance of the Danelaw line was seen with the absence of Scandinavian place names.
