Details
Visit to St Peter de Merton Church in Bedford covering the Saxon/Norman/Victorian architecture, the Military monuments, the rare Runic Stone and the characters e.g. Thackeray , who have contributed to Bedford Society over the years.
After refreshments the party were invited to climb the spiral staircase to reach the bell tower where the history of the bells and the infrastructure were detailed. Members of the party were permitted to ring one of the bells – it was not intuitive! The complexity of ringing a full peal of over 5000 bells was impressive.
A similar programme at St Pauls, Bedford was deferred to a later date.
