The measure of the competence(s) of the Norman landowners in a given Manor/Vill was assessed by comparing the value of the land in 1086 with the value assigned during the period of Edward the Confessor. There were only 3 categories 

Good Tenants:  where the current value exceeded the earlier value (green)

Stable Tenants: where the current value equalled the earlier value ( yellow)

Poor Tenants: where the current value was less than the earlier value (red)
