Using examples from Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire , Prof Sue Oosthuizen showed how the ancient field boundaries were distinguishable from modern hedges and hence older field systems could be identified. The continuing use of field names and ‘ends’ are used to bring structure to the historical landscape and to correlate the management of land during both the manorial system and the enclosure process .
